1998 - 1999 Newsletter
The planning and organizing for
the 30th Anniversary Celebrations of
the founding of our chapter are on full swing. We plan to have Latvia
on 19th February (Friday) and the Swing
Band on 20th February (Saturday) of 1999.
The Swing party is especially for our alumni, so don't forget to note it
down on your planners. For the latest news on this front and additional
information on boarding and lodging, etc., we have made a special page
which can be accessed by clicking
here. |
Our
Christmas Formal is coming up on December
5 (Saturday). Alumni and friends are encouraged to stop by and
visit the house. Right now, we are in search of a christmas tree. With
the good "Buddha" himself leading the
search, there is no way we can fail! The joyous event will also mark the
end of pledgeship for our pledges this semester. |

The
Halloween Party was a Gas! We co-hosted
the event with the sisters of GTU. The band for the party was "Four
Corners" which played the whole gamut of alternative, rock and
pop left many asking for more. The Halloween Party was the second event
that we had in the DKE house that Saturday. Check out the pictures
from the party. |
The
Blue Grass Party was held for the actives,
alumni and a few close friends of DKE on the afternoon of 31st
November. It, together with the Halloween party that night,
formed what we fondly called the DKE-A-Palooza.
The blue grass band was "Billy and
the Good Ol' Boys." Billy works in Sewanee and is on his way
to becoming a Sewanee tradition for strumming his acoustic guitar and regaling
us with beautiful songs in the Bishops' Commons during his spare time.
We have the pictures
from this event posted too. |
Shake
Day for Upper-Classmen
Rush took place on Homecoming (17th
Oct). We had two upper-classmen, sophomore
Terry Miller and junior Lee McGriff,
pledging DKE. We are delighted that they shook us and wish them all success
during pledgeship this semester. |
Over
15 alums, including Chris Morris, Ryan Mason,
Tom Hutto, Matt Cathey, Trey Suddarth, Umar Siddiqi, Nowlin Randolp, Brett
Trotter, Bill Chatanqua, John Bruckmeier, Jeff Willis, Kevin Greene, Bill
Buckley,Trice Fasig, Eric Foster and William Phillips III, visited
the DKE house on Homecoming
(17th Oct) and over Fall Party Weekend
(15 - 17 Oct). The alumni were pleased with the renovation done
by the actives on the the house that included repainting the insides of
the house pine green. Some of the actives and alumni, along with the new
pledges, later went to Four Seasons for dinner. We hope to see even more
alumni visit on Homecoming in the future. We will also be organizing a
Homecoming Dinner for alumni and actives
every Homecoming from now on. Last but not the least, we are thankful to
Brother Suddarth who made a generous
contribution to the fraternity and Brother Cathey
who gifted us the swing now installed in front of our house. Check out
the pictures from Homecoming. |
The
meeting of the Alumni Association was
held on the morning of Homecoming
(17th Oct). Over 15 alums were present in the meeting besides
the actives.Elections for the offices of the Alumni Association took place
first. Trice Fasig was re-elected President.
Other officers elected were SP Kalita
as Secretary, Nowlin
Randolph as Capital Projects Chair,
Ryan Mason as Fund
Raising Chair and Riddick Smiley
(in absentia) as Alumni Communications Chair.
Among other issues discussed during the meeting, it was decided that the
DKE House Corporation will be incorporated into the Alumni Association
instead of unnecessarily having two separate bodies. The actives were congratulated
for the good work that they have done so far. Members were also pleased
with the success of the University-sponsored "Fraternity Restoration" fund-raising
drive and expressed hope that more alumni will make contributions (deductions
are tax-free) to the University for DKE so that we may reach our goal for
$75, 000, the amount determined by the University Architect for renovating
our house. The University guarantees that the funds raised will be strictly
used only for structural renovation or improvement of fraternity houses.
Members also expressed their gratitude to brothers
Peter Squire, Trice Fasig and Fred Freeman, who made donations
to the Alumni Association. The Assocation also thanked alumni who took
part in the Alumni Work Weekend during the summer and expressed hope that
more alumni will take part in it in the future. The Association also hopes
that alumni from all years, especially from the 70's and the 80's will
come for the 30th Anniversary celebrations in February '99 and participate
in the revelry. Alumni Association meetings will be regularly held every
Homecoming from now on. Alumni who wish to actively participate in the
Association should contact Trice Fasig or email us. |
The
traditional DKE Toga Party, held during
Fall Party Weekend, took place on 15th Oct (Thursday)
this year. Needless to say, like every other year, it was the best event
we organized during the Fall semester, rivalled probably only by Latvia
but that takes place during the Spring semester. Almost all who were invited
came dressed in a Toga making it a Blast! The pictures from the party hasn't
been processed yet so we hope you will be patient while we take time to
get it up on the net. |

When
it comes to cheering our football team during a game, Dekes continue to
be the best. We have also been regular in helding Pre-Game
Cookouts that enable us not only to have a good time but also
to rush freshmen. Check out the pictures
from one such pre-game cookout. |
If
there is a single game that we enjoy playing the most, it's golf... well,
more like frisbee golf. A typical
afternoon in Sewanee spent constructively... |
We
have always excelled in scholarship and leadership.
This year, three of our brothers were inducted into the Order
of the Gownsmen -- George Phelps (Senior), SP Kalita (Sophomore)
and Daniel Shaver (Sophomore). Brother Shaver was also elected Vice
President of APO (the co-ed service fraternity) while brother
Kalita was elected President of Sewanee Cricketeers
and Secretary of OCCU (Organization
for Cross-Cultural Understanding). Brother Kalita was also appointed
Assistant Proctor by the University.
Furthermore, two of our brothers -- John McCloskey and Jeff Covington were
appointed Residential Computer Consultants
by the University. |
The
Alumni Work Weekend this summer was
a big success. We had more than half a dozen alums including Trice
Fasig, Trey Suddarth, Eric Foster, Ryan Mason, Chris Morris, Matt Cathey,
Tom Hutto and others, help renovate various parts of the house.
At the end of the day, everybody sat down and enjoyed each other's company
shooting Tequila. We have posted a couple of pictures from the weekend
here. We hope to organize
more such alumni work weekends in the future. Interested alumni may contact
Trice Fasig or email us. |
